Group of Birdwatchers Visits Bislig City
On April 21, 2021, Engr. Romulo C. Garay, City Administrator, together with Ms. Lorelei Teresa D. Lim, Tourism Operations Officer II, Atty. Conrad Cejoco, Board Member of Surigao del Sur and Ms. Ever Viola, Tinuy-an Operations Supervisor, had an exit dinner with a group of birdwatchers from EGIP Foundation namely: Mr. Pete Simpson (Avian Expert from Davao City), Mr. Julius Paner (Tourism Officer of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur), Engr. Alden Fernandez (Wildlife Photographer from Davao City) and Mr. Joshua Donato (Wildlife Conservationist from Davao City), and Mr. Zardo Goring, bird guide in town.
During the three and a half day-tour of the birdwatchers in the City, they saw (113) birds, (66) of which are endemic species in the country, in five areas namely: Tinuy-an Falls, Sitio Sote, Lake 77, Bislig Airport, and Road 4 Cemetery. Their findings for the areas are very positive in a sense that the ecology is well-preserved yet the Local Government Unit has to exert more on its drive to protect and conserve areas/ forests, as well as to provide alternative livelihood to the Indigenous People (IPs) and Locals in the nearby communities.
According to the said group of birdwatchers, ecotourism has an opportunity to play a crucial role in the conservation of the remaining forests of Bislig with the involvement of local communities.
